Chapter 40: First Arrival in the Dark Star System
“So dense?!” Lin Ke’s face changed as he looked at the radar display.
This area was only a few light-seconds away from the Redor Fortress garrison, a distance that was almost negligible in space.
Yet, even in such a close region, there was a wild NPC fleet. It was clear that deeper into the star system, danger would be even more pervasive.
“Sit tight, I’m going to give it a try,” Lin Zhichen exhaled. He had no intention of retreating but planned to launch an attack to gauge the strength of the wild NPC fleet in the Dark Star System.
The engines roared to life, and within a few seconds, the “Qinyuan” accelerated to 1‰* of light speed, charging towards the rebel fleet.
*stands for “per mille,” which means “per thousand.” It is similar to the percentage symbol “%” but represents a thousandth rather than a hundredth.
Sub-light speed assault!
Having preemptively tracked the movement of the “Qinyuan” via radar, the rebel fleet, which was preparing to disperse and encircle, immediately changed formation. Led by the cruiser, they formed a neat line and charged forward.
This was a head-on collision. Judging by the strength of both fleets, they were not on the same level at all. It was like a lone warrior tragically charging into a horde of enemies.
“Zzz~”
Electromagnetic projectiles were fired, forming a sparse net in the starry sky.
The rebel fleet launched the first attack. Utilizing their superior shipborne radar, the trajectories of their projectiles were generally close to the path of the “Qinyuan”, posing a far greater threat than the pirate fleets within the solar system.
The “Qinyuan,” flying at sub-light speed, continuously shook and made small adjustments, dodging the incoming projectiles. Not a single shot came close to hitting the psionic warship.
Although the fire seemed dense, it posed limited threat to the “Qinyuan” at sub-light speed. After briefly testing the enemy fleet’s fire density, Lin Zhichen immediately maneuvered the ship to turn sideways.
In space, as the two fleets moved towards each other, a starship suddenly veered off before a head-on collision, drawing an arc and bypassing the front of the rebel fleet, heading towards the side of the starry sky.
Within a second, the “Qinyuan” accelerated from 1‰ of light speed to 1% of light speed, and within a few more seconds, it reached 10%. It then made a wide turn in space, positioning itself to the side and rear of the rebel fleet.
At this moment, Lin Zhichen’s intent became clear. While the rebel fleet was still planning to resolve the conflict through a frontal battle, the “Qinyuan” had already targeted the enemy’s most vulnerable spot, preparing to deliver the most lethal attack.
In terms of military discipline, the rebel fleet was far superior to pirate fleets. As the “Qinyuan” veered towards the fleet’s flank, the enemy, having detected this maneuver via radar, quickly realized the danger. They immediately decelerated and turned to the side, attempting to keep the fleet’s front facing the enemy.
But it was futile. The “Qinyuan,” equipped with a gravity propulsion system, had maneuverability several levels above the enemy fleet. With a slight flick of its tail, it drew an arc in space, directly positioning itself behind the rebel fleet.
“Zzzt~”
Three coil guns fired, launching electromagnetic projectiles. Red streaks flashed through the sky, and three frigates exploded in a fiery burst.
Two seconds later, from the closest position to the rebel fleet, another round of electromagnetic cannon fire was launched.
Three dazzling beams of light appeared almost simultaneously in space. Including a destroyer, three rebel warships exploded in a fiery burst.
At this moment, the rebel fleet had not yet managed to turn around. They could only futilely rotate their turrets, firing at the trajectory of the “Qinyuan”.
But it was in vain, as the “Qinyuan” once again maneuvered in space, continuing its charge towards the rebel fleet.
The battle at this moment resembled an enraged giant bear frantically swatting, trying to kill the venomous bees buzzing around it.
Despite having strength a hundred times greater than the enemy, it was powerless against the extraordinary speed. Lin Zhichen maximized the speed advantage of the “Qinyuan”, tirelessly drawing circle after circle in space, driving one deadly “stinger” after another into the prey.
Explosions blossomed in space, with fragments of shattered ships tumbling chaotically. The once orderly rebel fleet gradually fell into disarray under the continuous harassing attacks of the “Qinyuan.” Some ships, unable to adjust in time, repositioned themselves based on their own judgment, even pointing their bows at friendly ships.
Due to the fleet’s disarray, the coordinated cannon fire became increasingly erratic. The “Qinyuan,” which was launching the attack, suddenly faced significantly reduced incoming fire, making the threat negligible.
Previously, to evade danger, the “Qinyuan” had accelerated to 10% of light speed during its attacks. This extreme speed made aiming difficult, allowing for at most two volleys per charge.
With the threat now diminished, Lin Zhichen reduced the speed of the “Qinyuan”, decelerating to 5% of light speed within seconds. At this speed, he could add an extra volley during each dive attack, further accelerating the rebel fleet’s losses.
In space, bursts of fire flared up and quickly faded back into darkness. The “Qinyuan” darted continuously, and starships exploded one after another on the battlefield. Like peeling an onion, the once-massive rebel fleet was destroyed layer by layer, gradually exposing its core—the cruiser at the heart of the fleet.
“Well protected,” Lin Zhichen praised. At this point, he no longer underestimated the rebel NPC commander. Despite being at an absolute disadvantage, the fleet maintained a certain formation.
After realizing the unstoppable momentum of the “Qinyuan”, the cruiser, serving as the fleet’s flagship, had retreated to the center of the formation. This thwarted Lin Zhichen’s attempts to execute a direct decapitation strike and disrupt the enemy fleet’s deployment, leaving him with no clear target.
“My sub-light speed assault capability was still lacking. Federation hero Bilus Decar can launch assaults at speeds exceeding 30% of light speed, weaving through dense enemy fleets to directly strike at their core. That level of skill is far beyond my current ability!”
What level was 30% of light speed?
Without relying on radar, you wouldn’t even be able to locate the enemy’s position or see their shadow. Imagine an enemy ship moving at 30% of light speed, weaving through a fleet, sometimes passing just a few meters away. How terrifying was that?
The psionic warnings never ceased, not from the enemy ships that had already been mostly destroyed, but from the deeper, darker regions of space.
His keen sixth sense told him that something dangerous was happening, and it was becoming increasingly perilous with each passing moment.
It was clear that while he considered this fleet his prey, a stronger predator was closing in, and the danger was almost imminent.
Fortunately, the long-awaited prey finally revealed itself. As the rebel warships were destroyed one by one, the cruiser, which had been protected at the core, finally became exposed. It seemed to have realized the crisis and was busy maneuvering its exposed stern back into the center of the fleet.
