Chapter 19: The truth is revealed, a farce!
The robber across the street removed his helmet, revealing a young man roughly Lin Yang’s age. With a resentful expression, he confessed, “I’ll admit, I broke the law, but I was pushed into a corner. The money in this bag… it was originally mine!”
Lin Yang and the others were bewildered.
“Your own money? Stealing from yourself?” They questioned.
Anticipating their confusion, the man clarified, “The woman I robbed is my ex-girlfriend. We were set to get engaged in March and later marry in the year. However, her family had second thoughts after my parents sent over a dowry of 200,000.”
“Despite going to court and winning a verdict for them to repay, they evaded it by transferring their assets, claiming poverty. I knew she withdrew a hundred thousand today, so I impulsively robbed her.”
Everyone fell silent. Despite his impulsive actions, the man seemed more unfortunate than villainous. Lin Yang, though not well-versed in the law, considered the situation. Legally, robbing to settle a debt is criminal, but the dynamics change if the money is fraudulently obtained.
The motorcycle man initially deceived them, but after the court ruling, he became a debtor. Lin Yang pondered whether it was fraud or debt, a distinction only Zhang San might know. While sympathy abounded, the impact of today’s riotous car robbery couldn’t be ignored, likely leading to legal consequences.

[These cheating marriages are really abominable. Not only will the young man lose his money, but he will also go to jail. Don’t say that he broke the law. If there was no cheating marriage by that woman, would he have come to this point?]. [So the country lacks the means to punish Lao Lai. It is the uncle who owes money these years. There are good words to say when borrowing money, and some people are thin-skinned, so they borrow it. As a result, when I needed money, I turned my face and refused to recognise people. This kind of thing happened a lot.]. [It is recommended that Lao Lai be sentenced directly. I have seen many videos of courts searching Lao Lai’s house. In the beginning, he was very arrogant and refused to pay back the family’s money. Well, when the court enforces it, or if he is sent to jail, he will panic and pay back the money immediately.]. [However, the reality is that the hundreds of thousands that the guy snatched back were exchanged for several years of prison life. If the stolen money is returned in the end, it will really make things worse. If you can’t get your money back if you rob it, you will go to jail and can’t get it. Isn’t this too unfair to him?].….
As we were about to wrap up our team’s activities, sirens wailed nearby, signalling the arrival of the traffic police. They approached, and Li Dui greeted them, jesting about catching fugitives. The traffic police clarified that they were there for the racing gang, expressing intent to revoke driver’s licenses and enforce penalties.
Wearing an odd expression, Li Dui pointed at Lin Yang, suggesting they handle him. The head of the traffic police detachment, surprised, questioned why Lin Yang should be treated differently. Li Dui explained the misunderstanding, revealing Lin Yang’s role in helping catch robbers.
The captain, after hearing the story, was caught in a dilemma. Lin Yang’s actions, though disruptive to traffic, were driven by good intentions. Punishing him could lead to negative publicity. The captain sighed, realising the complexity of the situation. Glancing at Lin Yang, he commented on his racing skills, acknowledging the chief’s praise.
The motorcycle man affirmed Lin Yang’s driving prowess, contemplating a shift to a more powerful car if not for his involvement in the current events.

[I’m a little disappointed. I didn’t expect to figure out the misunderstanding so quickly. I also want to see what funny things will happen if the misunderstanding continues.].…..
As things were wrapping up, Lin Yang accompanied the police back to the station for documentation. When the child’s mother saw her daughter, tears flowed uncontrollably. Realising their misunderstanding, the parents, overcome with gratitude, rushed to Lin Yang and knelt, thanking him profusely.
Quickly pulling them up, Lin Yang offered reassurance, acknowledging his initial misjudgment. The mother expressed understanding, admitting their shortcomings in allowing their child to get lost. In a gesture of gratitude, the father handed Lin Yang money, explaining it as a thank-you gift.
Upon hearing the amount – 200,000 yuan – Lin Yang was momentarily stunned. He clarified that he had only given the child 20 yuan for a piece of shredded bread and a cup of milk. The girl’s father, also shocked, humorously remarked on his wife’s reaction, emphasising the absurdity of the ransom amount.
