Chapter 40: Sweeping Monk Protagonist! Be alert!
“My lord, there is an emergency.”
At this moment, a clergyman approached Bishop Fellen in a deep voice and began to speak. Bishop Fellen’s face changed, and he looked at Su Mo.
Earl, I still have some things to deal with here. The earl can go around at will. The earl doesn’t have to worry about safety issues in the Holy See.
Su Mo said indifferently, “Okay, the bishop can go to work on his own.”
After Bishop Fellen nodded to Su Mo, he left in a hurry.
“The time is just right.” Su Mo spoke softly. He knew why Bishop Fellen left.
Additionally, the departure time was close from Su Mo’s calculation. As soon as Bishop Fellen left, in this library with a large number of ancient books, there were only the clerics guarding the door and the guy sweeping the floor in the library.
Currently, the protagonist has regained his composure. “Maybe he came in under the pretext of borrowing a book. Here, he must not dare to touch me.” The protagonist guessed. He was not overly worried because he predicted Su Mo would never dare to do anything in the core area of the Holy See.
He didn’t provoke Su Mo either but continued to flip through the book. As the repair person of this library, the protagonist regarded himself as a “sweeping monk” from another world. Because of his golden finger, he could extract ancient magic from these ancient books.
It was also possible to extract the remaining magic power or other powers from some ancient objects. For example, he extracted a trace of divine thread power from an ancient book, which increased his strength a lot. This was also the reason he nestled in this library.
In his opinion, as long as he could successfully nest here for a year or two, he could become a kind of existence like a sweeping monk in martial arts novels. This place was also the safest for him.
Although he pretended to be reading, the protagonist kept a watchful eye on Su Mo from the corner of his eye. He noticed that Su Mo seemed genuinely interested in finding books, taking them out and putting them back on the shelves. Although, Su Mo was getting closer and closer to him, making the protagonist uneasy.
“He doesn’t seem particularly strong,” the protagonist guessed. He realised that many early-stage villains derived advantages from their identity, status, and power rather than their strength. Dealing with them could be more challenging than facing someone with significant personal power. After all, how could one person compare to an entire organisation?
As Su Mo approached, the protagonist became even more vigilant.
“Hello, Earl!” He greeted Su Mo as he put away the book, stood up straight, and saluted him. He didn’t want to give Su Mo any excuse to find fault.
Su Mo’s gaze fixed on him, and his plain eyes seemed to possess an enormous power that made the protagonist feel uncomfortable all over his body. After being scrutinised by Su Mo for almost a minute, the protagonist felt out of breath.
“My lord, do you have any orders?” he asked, facing the situation. Su Mo withdrew his gaze and spoke lightly, “You’re well hidden. I hope that in a day, others will be able to hide as well as you.” After speaking, Su Mo turned and left, leaving the protagonist puzzled.
“What does that mean?” He wondered. Despite his confusion, seeing Su Mo leave brought the protagonist some relief. Although he was sure that Su Mo wouldn’t dare to harm him in such a secure location, he still felt safer once Su Mo had gone.
I need to quickly extract that magic so that I can also gain some self-protection power, the protagonist thought.
His golden finger was a tool for selecting attributes, but the level of items he could access depended on his level of contact. Unfortunately, his level of contact with the protagonist, who had this ability, was too low.
Although, as a “sweeping monk” hidden away in the library of the Holy See, he had access to many ancient magic books, which allowed him to grow much faster. Despite his innocent appearance, this protagonist was already one of the strongest in the capital, thanks to the favourable environment of the library that suited him so well.
……
“Where was this creature captured?” Asked Bishop Fellen in a secret room at the Holy See headquarters, where several ominous abyssal creatures were being held.
One of the creatures was an earth-walking demon, not a typical demon but an abyssal creature. “It was caught to the north, where the divine light illuminated a faint demonic aura,” a Temple Knight dressed in secret silver armour reported. “After we chased it, we found a small passage in an underground cave, which we have since blocked off.”
“Have you searched the surrounding area?” inquired Bishop Fellen. “We are conducting a search, but so far, we have found nothing else,” replied the Temple Knight.
“The Goddess’ blessing ceremony seems to have attracted some demons. We cannot allow this to disrupt the ceremony,” Bishop Fellen said. “Inform the Saintess and strengthen the defence of the royal capital. We will also bring back some Temple Knights and magicians from other areas.”
Bishop Fellen was quick to organise a response to the situation, but he knew that they could not take any chances. He did not want to cause panic by spreading news of the incident, but he wanted to raise the security level of the capital to another level. Despite his efforts, he still felt uneasy about the situation.
Bishop Fellen knew he was getting old and would soon retire as a cardinal. He had been a stable figure throughout his lifetime but couldn’t afford to make any mistakes in the last few years of his career.
“I must pray to the Goddess and ask her to make some preparations,” he decided before leaving the room. Bishop Fellen was unaware that the demon that was causing trouble was not an ordinary one. This was also Su Mo’s goal, and he had created those earth-moving demons and the small underground passages.
The passage had existed for a long time, and Su Mo had only opened it recently. It was a small passage, and only weaker phantoms could pass through it. Su Mo didn’t intend to let the stronger phantoms come through, so he used the cannon fodder available in the Phantom Dynasty to create a distraction. He aimed to make the Holy See vigilant and prevent the Spike Demon God from being caught easily.
Crescent Kingdom’s losses were not expected to be significant, which gave Su Mo more room to maneuver. The next day at noon, the busy Crescent Queen approached Su Mo with a new development. “Mo, there’s a new development. This blessing ceremony is likely to be disrupted by demons.” The Queen revealed a secret that only a few in the Holy See knew.
“A demon causing trouble?” Su Mo expressed surprise. The Crescent Queen nodded, “Yes, the Holy See found a passage in the northern mountainous area and killed some abyssal creatures. Although no other passages have been found yet, the demons are likely to take action.”
She quickly reassured Su Mo, “But don’t worry, we have made some preparations. The Goddess will send you more blessings for this blessing ceremony.”
Su Mo replied with a simple “Oh” before the Queen instructed him to rest up early as they left for the Holy See at five in the morning.
Su Mo returned to the palace and rested as though he had nowhere to be. Meanwhile, the palace guards, who had once been concerned, were no longer as worried but remained cautious not to give Su Mo any reason to act out. Time passed swiftly. Before they knew it, it was already the day of the grand blessing ceremony.
