Chapter 1: Surrounded by Cultists of the Dark God—How to Save Yourself
The pale moon was shrouded by thick clouds, and countless stars dimmed their brilliance, silently decorating the dark night sky.
In a modest house in Hang City, a cry of agony pierced the quiet night.
“The ninth time!”
Lu Yu awoke from his nightmare, clutching his throbbing head while forcing himself to endure the lingering haze. He unconsciously muttered the words etched in his memory:
“…Stars fading… Glory lost… Apocalypse… Break the chains… Blood… Awakening… God… He…”
The intangible murmurs reverberated through the room like a grim symphony played by Death itself, as though the dark mother goddess extended her hands to strangle him in a cold embrace.
But dreams, like fleeting blossoms, withered and vanished quickly. Before long, most of it had slipped from Lu Yu’s mind.
Rubbing his temples, he grabbed the glass of water on the nightstand and downed it in one gulp. This marked his ninth occurrence of such a dreadful nightmare.
These weren’t ordinary ghostly dreams but a terror beyond words—an unspeakable horror.
The soft murmurs, akin to sacred chants, lingered in his dreams. He saw dozens of figures cloaked in triangular masks, etching sinister symbols that radiated a sense of nausea and dread.
They seemed to chant a forbidden name, but even after nine dreams, Lu Yu couldn’t discern the syllables. That name seemed taboo.
His gut told him this was something perilous.
Shaken by the nightmare, Lu Yu abandoned sleep and picked up his phone, browsing the news to pass the time.
“Entire female dormitory vanishes at Long’an High School—only scattered clothes and traces of blood remain. All surveillance destroyed!”
“A cult ritual discovered in Beihai City. The entire town was massacred and offered as a sacrifice, summoning the Dark God’s minions before being suppressed by special forces!”
“Important Notice: Avoid venturing outdoors in the coming weeks…”
One news story after another scrolled past on the dimly lit screen, reflecting Lu Yu’s sharp and refined face.
“This world is truly dangerous… How safe Earth seems in comparison.”
Reading the reports, Lu Yu unconsciously clenched his water glass, his expression growing heavier.
He was a transmigrator, a wanderer from a blue planet.
This world, though sharing modern aspects with Earth, was overrun by mysterious, monstrous beings—wild beasts, demonic creatures, and nightmarish anomalies.
They had existed since time immemorial, ruthlessly consuming humanity’s limited resources and snuffing out lives.
Though humanity possessed intellect, their frail bodies were powerless against such monsters.
Fortunately, fate didn’t abandon them. The first Awakened emerged, followed by countless others.
With newfound powers, humanity finally fought back.
Pioneers laid down their lives, spilling blood to establish settlements and fortify cities. Defensive systems kept the monsters at bay, allowing humans a chance to thrive.
This history convinced Lu Yu that this world was not Earth but an unknown realm.
Given a choice, he would have refused to transmigrate.
In his past life, he had worked tirelessly, amassing millions in assets—not a billionaire, but wealthy enough for a comfortable life.
Just as he was about to embrace financial freedom and indulge in life’s pleasures, he transmigrated.
Without warning, with just a blink, he was thrust into a new world!
And he started as an orphan—hard mode!
It felt like clearing a game without saving, only to have his progress reset!
To make matters worse, he faced nightmare-level difficulty with no inherited gear.
All Lu Yu wanted was to be a laid-back drifter, not a world-saving hero.
Fortunately, his late parents left him two million in inheritance, enabling him to grow up safely without venturing outdoors or dabbling in occult games like spirit-summoning rituals.
Yet even in peaceful survival, nightmares found him.
Trying to clear his mind, Lu Yu moved toward the window, hoping the night view might soothe him.
But through the neighboring window, left carelessly undrawn, he saw them—dark-robed figures encircling eerie, twisted symbols.
Cultists of the Dark God!
And a whole group of them!
Lu Yu couldn’t suppress the curse forming in his mind: “MMP!”
No wonder he’d been plagued by nightmares—there was a cult operating right next door!
He had no delusions of being an invincible hero. All he craved was a peaceful life, yet trouble insisted on knocking.
The news stories flashed through his mind—cults that sacrificed countless lives to appease dark deities, earning dark powers through human souls.
Wherever a Dark God cult emerged, corpses would inevitably follow, with countless victims reduced to sacrificial offerings.
The thought of becoming another lifeless body made Lu Yu’s brows furrow.
“As a youth embracing core values, I should leave this to the professionals!”
Resolute, Lu Yu grabbed his phone. He was no thrill-seeking protagonist and wasn’t even sure he had plot armor!
A true pragmatist, he lived by the principle of avoiding danger.
Besides, reporting a Dark God cult came with a reward of fifty to two hundred thousand credits!
“With a hundred grand, I’d eat well for years!”
Just as he prepared to dial, a mechanical, emotionless voice echoed in his mind:
“Dark God presence detected… Initial task completed… Binding Anomaly Editing System… Initial rewards distributing…”
The monotone voice droned on as realization dawned upon Lu Yu—this was the legendary system!
Excitement surged within him.
“Sixteen years… You’ve finally arrived!”
Even though the system claimed the task was complete, it had never issued a mission in the first place!
Suppressing a torrent of complaints, Lu Yu focused. With this cheat-like power, he could finally resist.
He called out softly, “System!”
A thick, gray mist enveloped the room, merging reality and illusion into an ethereal realm.
A dark streak of light trailed sparks across the void, stopping before Lu Yu and transforming into a bronze chest engraved with intricate patterns that shimmered alongside the swirling mist.
“Open the chest?”
Lu Yu nodded, extending a trembling hand. As he touched the chest, it shattered into bronze fragments, leaving behind five items:
A pitch-black cloth. A blue light orb. A broken knife fragment. A mass of burning black flames. A damaged pocket watch.
“What… is this?”
Before he could ponder further, the mechanical voice resumed:
“Randomly selected five basic materials from myriad worlds. Choose and combine to create your first minion. Its potential depends on your combinations. You will gain one innate ability from the created entity, permanently etched into your being. Your hands… are the hands of creation—agents of chaos!”
