Chapter 54: I really didn’t come to strike up a conversation
In their past life, Gu Liuyun was aware of this task, but at that time, no one could find the demonic cultivator Qiu San. When they found him, the three-day deadline had passed, and the Holy Saintess killed the White Emperor City Lord.
Of course, the Holy Saintess didn’t have a good ending either, as she later faced a desperate situation and chose to self-destruct, ending her life as a once-prominent figure. Now, with Gu Liuyun carrying memories from his past life, he knew that Qiu San was hiding in Lone Hanging Mountain, about 300 miles away. Capturing and bringing him back promises 500,000 spirit stones and a chance to improve his relationship with the White Emperor City Lord.
More importantly, he wondered if changing the fate of the Holy Maiden might bring him even greater benefits. After receiving the task, Gu Liuyun left the main city. However, he didn’t head directly to Lone Hanging Mountain but chose to go to a nearby town not far from the Buddha Sect.
Not going directly to Lone Hanging Mountain was because knowing where Qiu San was located is one thing, but successfully dealing with him once found is another. Qiu San was a formidable opponent, two realms above Gu Liuyun in strength. While Gu Liuyun had spirit armor and a Nascent Ring for protection, it didn’t guarantee he could defeat Qiu San.
Gu Liuyun’s main purpose in coming to this small town was to acquire an item that could enhance his combat abilities and increase his chances of successfully dealing with Qiu San.
The town was well-known for its strong Buddhist influence. Gu Liuyun found it amusing to hear people constantly using phrases like “Amitabha Buddha” and “good, good.” However, he refrained from laughing because the town was close to the Buddhist sect, and its residents and disciples were deeply devoted to Buddhism.
While wandering in the town, Gu Liuyun randomly selected a young woman and inquired about the presence of an old carpenter or someone from a carpenter’s family who was chronically ill.
The young woman was initially shocked by his question but quickly realized that Gu Liuyun was a distinguished gentleman. She explained that several old carpenters were in town but was unsure about anyone with the surname Tan or who was chronically ill.
Gu Liuyun continued questioning and asked about a carpenter with a family member who was frequently bedridden. This question caught the young woman off guard, and her cheeks blushed. She mistakenly assumed he was interested in her and suggested he could propose marriage to the Zhang family.
Gu Liuyun was perplexed by the young woman’s response and quickly realized she had misunderstood his intentions. He was not here to court anyone.
Frustrated by the lack of information, Gu Liuyun contemplated asking someone else but spotted an herbal medicine shop in the distance. Excited, he stopped a passerby and asked about the number of pharmacies in the town, to which the passerby replied that there was only one.
Gu Liuyun thanked the passerby and, realizing it was nearly evening. He decided to sit in a teahouse across from the herbal medicine shop. He ordered a teapot and waited patiently for the right opportunity to acquire what he needed. After waiting for nearly an hour, it was almost dark, but Gu Liuyun remained calm and continued sipping his tea. When he was about to finish his third pot of tea, he finally spotted an old man in tattered clothes with sawdust on his hands heading towards the herbal medicine shop.
Gu Liuyun settled the bill, entered the herbal medicine shop, and heard the shop assistant conversing with the old man.
The old man was in the process of brewing medicine for his bedridden grandson. The medicine was the last hope for the child. A middle-aged man in Buddhist attire arrived, demanding that the old man hand over something that belonged to his son, which could potentially save the grandson’s life. The old man refused, explaining that his son had left nothing behind when he passed away.
The middle-aged man became aggressive, threatening to harm the child unless the old man complied. He even used some power to exacerbate the child’s coughing fits. In desperation, the old man tried to stop the middle-aged man physically, but he was effortlessly pushed aside. The middle-aged man intended to enter the house, and the old man continued to obstruct him, but he was again kicked away.
At this critical moment, an unknown voice from behind startled the middle-aged man, who had failed to notice anyone nearby. Confused, he was about to attack the person behind him when he suddenly froze. The reason for his hesitation became clear as a shimmering, translucent red flying sword appeared before him, aimed directly at his forehead.
