Chapter 9: The Disappointment of the Master’s Wife!
“Junior Sister! Junior Sister! Junior…” Outside, Yue Buqun was still knocking on the door while calling for Ning Zhongze. When the door suddenly opened, he was startled and almost stumbled forward.
“Stop calling!” Ning Zhongze’s expression was calm. She glanced at Yue Buqun and spoke coldly.
Seeing the door open, Yue Buqun was immediately overjoyed. He stood up and looked at his beloved wife, asking out of confusion, “Junior Sister! What were you doing in there? Huh? You’ve changed into a new set of clothes?”
Ning Zhongze furrowed her brow.
Shouldn’t he be more concerned about whether I’m okay? Why is he asking about such things?
Ning Zhongze looked at the familiar face before her, and for a moment, she became distracted. After a brief daze, she regained her composure and asked, “Senior Brother! Weren’t you leading everyone in the morning class in the front hall? Why are you still in the room?”
“Don’t say that,” Yue Buqun said seriously upon hearing her words. “I came back because of you and Chong’er.”
“You and Chong’er?” Ning Zhongze felt a jolt in her heart upon hearing his words. A flash of panic crossed her face.
Could he have found out?
No, that can’t be.
Ning Zhongze shook her head, thinking it was unlikely. At that time, there shouldn’t have been anyone else on the back mountain.
“Junior Sister! What happened between you and Chong’er? We haven’t heard from you for days. I sent my disciples down the mountain to search for you. This morning, I received news that you were ambushed and went missing, so I came back to pack my things and prepare to head down the mountain to find you.” Yue Buqun spoke in one breath.
Although his words carried concern, there was little worry or tension in his expression. He appeared completely calm.
“So that’s how it is!” Ning Zhongze said, a bitter smile appearing on her face. This was quite a coincidence.
“Junior Sister! What exactly happened? Were you attacked?” Yue Buqun asked.
“Yes, Senior Brother!” Ning Zhongze answered, her expression turning serious and angry.
She recalled the vile black-clad figures, and a strong killing intent suddenly erupted from her. If it hadn’t been for their ambush and underhanded tactics with poison, she wouldn’t have ended up in such a situation with Chong’er.
Yue Buqun felt the terrifying killing intent emanating from Ning Zhongze, and he was immediately shocked. His usually composed and gentle wife had suddenly released such a terrifying aura.
At that moment, Yue Buqun also realized the severity of the situation and asked, “Junior Sister, what exactly happened?”
“Senior Brother, I suspect that there is a traitor in Huashan,” Ning Zhongze said gravely.
“A traitor?” Yue Buqun was confused.
“Chong’er and I descended the mountain secretly, and only a few people knew of our whereabouts. Yet, somehow, our movements were leaked.”
“On our way back, we were ambushed by a group of mysterious black-clad figures. They were all highly skilled, and I fought fiercely to carve a bloody path out with Chong’er and managed to escape.”
“While we were hiding, I overheard them saying that they had people within Huashan, and if Chong’er and I appeared on the main path of Huashan, we would be ambushed and killed.”
“What? Something like this happened? Who are these people? I will never let them go!” Yue Buqun was enraged.
How dare someone challenge the authority of the Huashan Sect?
The Huashan Sect was one of the Five Mountains Sword Sects, a prestigious faction. Even though it had declined a little, it was unforgivable that someone would try to harm their people in broad daylight.
“Senior Brother!!!” Ning Zhongze was slightly touched by Yue Buqun’s anger. Thinking about what had happened with Linghu Chong, she couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of guilt.
“Don’t worry, Junior Sister. I will find these people and avenge you. I will restore the prestige of the Huashan Sect and let them know that we are not to be trifled with. As one of the Five Mountains Sword Sects, Huashan is not a sect that anyone can provoke,” Yue Buqun said, filled with wrath.
Ning Zhongze heard Yue Buqun’s words, and her expression immediately froze. She realized that her mistake had been thinking that his anger was for her. It was all for Huashan.
Ning Zhongze felt a pang of disappointment in her heart. She knew that Yue Buqun valued the reputation of Huashan more than anything else. His entire life had been spent trying to revive the sect.
For decades, he had focused on Huashan’s development and managing its affairs. Her relationship with him felt more like a role of assisting him in revitalizing the sect, rather than as a wife.
In all of this, Yue Buqun had not demonstrated much of what a husband should be. This made her feel sorrowful, but she had to silently accept it because she, too, was a member of Huashan, and everything they did represented the entire sect.
“All right, Senior Brother! I believe you can do it!” Ning Zhongze said, her eyebrows twitching slightly as she spoke absentmindedly.
She no longer wanted to hear anything more from Yue Buqun. From the moment he entered, he hadn’t asked once if she was hurt or how she was doing.
“What happened after that, Junior Sister? How did you return?” Yue Buqun asked.
“Because there was concern about danger in the front mountain, I took Chong’er to hide in the back mountain. Once we recovered our strength, we came back,” Ning Zhongze explained.
When she said this, Ning Zhongze’s mind briefly wandered, and the image of Linghu Chong flashed through her mind.
At this moment, she couldn’t let anything unusual show on her face, lest Yue Buqun notice something.
Ning Zhongze didn’t mention using her lightness skill to fly up from the back mountain. It was too shocking.
Her abilities before wouldn’t have been enough to make such a feat possible, and moreover, she had Linghu Chong with her. She didn’t want to expose her current skills.
“I see. So, it seems there really could be a traitor in Huashan,” Yue Buqun nodded thoughtfully. “Junior Sister, who do you think this traitor might be?”
He was very angry and suspected that the traitor might have been planted by one of the other Four Mountains Sword Sects, with the most likely culprit being the Songshan Sect.
The Songshan Sect was thriving under the leadership of Zuo Lengchan, and it had the potential to become the leader of the Five Mountains.
Zuo Lengchan was extremely ambitious, always trying to unify the Five Mountains Sword Sects and become the leader of the martial world, with power over all.
Moreover, he had been secretly suppressing Huashan. Yue Buqun was furious and unwilling to accept this, but due to his lack of strength, he had no choice but to endure and plan his next move.
Ning Zhongze felt irritated by this, and she snapped, “I don’t know!”
“J-Junior Sister…” Yue Buqun was stunned. This was the first time Ning Zhongze had snapped at him. She had never done this before.
Seeing that she had lost her composure, Ning Zhongze placed her delicate hand on her head and rubbed her temples, her tone softening a little. “All right, Senior Brother! I’m tired. I want to rest. You go ahead and handle your matters. Don’t worry, Chong’er and I are fine.”
“Ah! Yes, yes, you should rest. It’s my fault. You’ve had a hard time hiding from the pursuit. Your clothes are torn, and you might be hurt. Let me check, or I’ll call a doctor to examine you.”
Yue Buqun now knew how to show concern. Why hadn’t he done that earlier?
When Ning Zhongze heard Yue Buqun mention her torn clothes, a flash of panic and redness crossed her face. She awkwardly said, “There’s no need, Senior Brother. It’s just some superficial injuries. My clothes were torn during the fight and while running.”
