Chapter 11: A horse without night grass will not thrive.
Pa-pat… “This wooden box has another hidden compartment.”
Mù Liáng scraped his finger along the bottom of the wooden box and found the sound to be hollow.
He used his military knife to pry open the bottom of the box, revealing a cloth bag inside. Opening it, he found that it contained seeds.
“Vegetable seeds, no wonder they were hidden in a secret compartment,” Mù Liáng said with delight, tying the cloth bag up and stuffing it into his backpack.
In the wasteland-like post-apocalyptic world, the seeds of green plants represented one of the most important hopes for the revival of civilization in the future.
Next, he searched the room. Opening the wardrobe beside the bed, he was surprised once again.
Five rolls of cloth, each a different color, were neatly arranged in the wardrobe.
“This is a lot of stuff; it looks like I’ll need to find some help,” Mù Liáng muttered to himself.
He carefully lifted the five rolls of cloth from the wardrobe, rubbing his chin as he thought about how to carry them out of the room.
There were many things in the leader’s room that Mù Liáng wanted to take.
Who told him he had crossed over into this world with nothing? In a wasteland like this, even if you had money, there was nowhere to buy basic supplies.
“Xiǎo Cǎi, come in quietly,” Mù Liáng called with his mind, summoning the three-colored lizard that had been secretly guarding the girl. He needed it to help carry the goods.
He couldn’t summon the Rock Armored Turtle; if it came, it might break through the wall.
The three-colored lizard quickly arrived. Mù Liáng packed up what he planned to take—five rolls of cloth and a bundle of swords and knives.
He rummaged through the wardrobe again, finding mostly things used by the leader—clothes, quilts, and so on.
He had no interest in used things.
“Here’s a new wolf pelt.”
Mù Liáng opened the last wardrobe and found a whole wolf pelt carefully stored inside.
He pulled it out, examining it. The edges weren’t processed, indicating it had never been used.
“I knew it! With three wolf heads, how could there not be any wolf pelts?”
Mù Liáng rolled the wolf pelt up and set it aside, muttering, “Now I don’t have to worry about blankets.”
After organizing everything, Mù Liáng looked up at the ceiling.
The three-colored lizard arrived quickly, not needing to climb the walls to hide like Mù Liáng. It simply used its claws to cling to the ceiling and crawled over.
“Come down and help me move some things back,” Mù Liáng called out, waving to the lizard.
Hiss, hiss~
The three-colored lizard tilted its head, then crawled down the wall.
“It’s a bit small. Looks like it can’t carry too many things.”
Mù Liáng glanced at the five rolls of cloth, each about a meter long, and then at the three-colored lizard, which was only a meter long itself.
“Looks like I need to evolve you to level 3.”
Mù Liáng raised his hand and placed it on the three-colored lizard’s body, mentally giving the command to the system: “Evolve the three-colored lizard to level 3.”
Ding! “Level 2 three-colored lizard has evolved to level 3, deducting 100 evolution points.”
Ding! “Level 3 three-colored lizard evolution complete.”
Ding! “Level 3 three-colored lizard ability evolution: Mimicry Stealth.”
Ding! “Trainer ‘Mimicry Stealth’ ability synchronized to level 3.”
Mù Liáng felt the warmth in his body as it once again strengthened.
“Mimicry Stealth? Can it be used while moving?” Mù Liáng focused on this new ability.
He immediately activated the “Mimicry Stealth” ability, and his body began to change color to blend with the environment as he moved.
“There’s a slight delay of about one second during the color shift. The faster I move, the greater the delay in the color change.”
“This stealth ability works best when moving slowly. The delay decreases the slower I move, so it’s actually pretty suitable for sneaking.”
Mù Liáng mentally summarized the pros and cons of the new ability, feeling quite satisfied with it.
The key was being able to remain hidden while moving—that was the most impressive part.
After observing his own changes, Mù Liáng turned to look at the now-evolved three-colored lizard, which had doubled in size.
The two-meter-long lizard now had scales in distinct colors: green, red, and blue, making it appear very vibrant.
There were several sharp spikes near its head, and its brown vertical pupils gave it a cold, intimidating look.
“Xiǎo Cǎi, I should give you wings. You could even pretend to be a dragon.”
Mù Liáng lightly patted the lizard’s head.
Hiss, hiss~ The lizard tilted its head in confusion, wondering what a dragon was.
“Stay still and don’t move. Help me carry these things back.”
Mù Liáng tied the five rolls of cloth, the wolf pelt, and the bundle of swords to the three-colored lizard’s back.
Hiss, hiss~ The lizard wriggled uncomfortably as the weight shifted.
“Hurry up, let Minuo help you unload the items, then come back here again.”
Mù Liáng waved his hand with a mischievous smile, sending the lizard out through the window.
Hiss, hiss~ The lizard gripped the wall with its claws and left, easily leaving scratch marks in the wood.
“I have to hurry, or the leader’s death will be discovered.”
Mù Liáng left the room silently, resuming his search through the house.
At this moment, the maidservants were obediently staying in their designated places, waiting for their master’s summons.
A horse without night grass will not thrive.
Mù Liáng’s next goal was food. Since he was already here, he might as well take some food too.
While searching, he spotted someone acting suspiciously.
“Hey? Isn’t that Ah Gu?”
Mù Liáng recognized the side profile of the person—it was Ah Gu, who had appeared in the hall earlier.
Curious, Mù Liáng decided to follow him and see what he was up to in the leader’s house.
Ah Gu looked around, and seeing no one, he quietly entered a room.
Mù Liáng peeked through the crack in the door and was surprised to find it was a food storage room.
Inside, Ah Gu was not alone—there was also a maidservant.
Cheating? Mù Liáng quickly thought, but immediately dismissed the idea.
“Ah Gu, are you crazy? Taking so much meat? If the leader finds out, he’ll kill you.”
The maidservant saw Ah Gu stuffing meat into a cloth bag, carefully selecting the best pieces.
Normally, Ah Gu might steal a little meat, and the maidservant would help cover for him.
But now, with so much meat, the maidservant couldn’t cover it up.
“The leader has lost his mind. He’s planning to team up with the Blood Beard group and kill anyone in the camp who doesn’t listen to him,” Ah Gu growled in frustration. “I didn’t go to the hill today, thinking I could disrupt his plans, but I didn’t expect him to ‘lose his mind’ and contact the Blood Beard group ahead of time.”
Yes, when he was in the hall, he had tricked the leader as a test.
It was clear now, seeing that he was preparing to run away.
Ah Gu thought that by not contacting the bandit scouts, he could sow distrust between them. But the leader had already made arrangements with the Blood Beard group.
There was no more distrust. As soon as the two sides met, it would expose him, and he’d have no way out.
So, Ah Gu was preparing to run away tonight.
“How could the leader team up with the Blood Beard group?” the maidservant asked, her face pale with shock, completely losing her composure.
Ah Gu shoved the maidservant, urging, “Hurry up and pack your things.”
“Okay, okay,” the maidservant quickly regained her senses and nodded repeatedly.
Mù Liáng let the maidservant leave, his eyes locked on Ah Gu, who was still packing meat.
Plans never survive contact with the enemy.
Mù Liáng decided to change his plan.
