Chapter 13: The Astonished Girl
The time rewinds to just a few minutes ago.
Inside the wooden hut at the camp’s outskirts, Minuo quickly skinned all the small lizards and three rats, removing their innards and tying them up with rope to hang over the fire for smoking. The girl rubbed her palms together in the sand, cleaning the blood from her hands. There was no water to wash, so sand was her only option to clean the dirt.
“Why has Muliang been gone so long? What is he doing?”
Minuo’s blue eyes stared blankly at the wooden hut door.
“It’s been so long. Could something have happened to him?”
The girl spent over an hour preparing the lizards and rats. Now that she had some free time, and it had been a while since she’d seen Muliang, a sense of worry arose within her. Or perhaps it was more loneliness, a feeling of insecurity.
“Aiya! Muliang is so strong, he should be fine.”
Minuo shook her small head, forcing herself to calm down.
She turned her attention back to the wooden hut, thinking about what to take with her.
“This pillow has to go, and this wild rabbit skin quilt too.”
“The bed’s wood needs to be taken, or else we won’t have a bed to sleep on.”
“The wooden bowls too, and this wooden bucket for carrying water.”
Minuo looked around, reluctant to throw anything away, even the wooden door of the hut seemed like something worth taking.
All the things in the hut were gathered by her sister, piece by piece.
Crunch, crunch~~
Suddenly, a scratching sound came from the wooden hut door, followed by the door being pushed open. A blurry figure squeezed in.
“Who?” Minuo’s face changed, and she reacted quickly, drawing a bone spike from her waist.
The girl immediately retreated to the side of the hut.
Hiss, hiss~~
The three-colored lizard hissed a few times, its body fading from invisibility.
“You… you’re Little Cai?” Minuo stared at the unfamiliar appearance of the three-colored lizard.
She hesitated for a moment, then said, “If it’s you, nod your head.”
Hiss, hiss~~
The three-colored lizard didn’t pay attention to her and wiggled its body, using its claws to tug at the rope tied around its belly.
“How silly, who other than Muliang would be capable of having a lizard deliver things?”
Minuo thought for a moment and realized her mistake.
She sheathed the bone spike and stepped forward, saying, “Let me help you.”
The three-colored lizard saw her approach and obediently stopped wriggling, allowing the girl to untie the cloth, wolf skin, and bundle of swords and knives from its back.
It then turned and left the hut, continuing to move things for its reckless master.
“Hey, hey? Where’s Muliang?” Minuo quickly called out.
The three-colored lizard didn’t turn its head and just walked away.
Though the domesticated beast had evolved and gained some intelligence, it was still only at the level of a two or three-year-old child and could not understand the girl’s words.
“Seems like it really doesn’t understand me,” Minuo sighed helplessly.
The girl focused her attention on the five rolls of cloth, wolf skin, and the bundle of swords.
She rubbed the fabric and with shining blue eyes remarked, “This fabric is so soft; it’s made of good beast fur.”
“But where did Muliang get this cloth? Five rolls could make dozens of outfits.”
Minuo reluctantly put down the cloth and shook out the wolf skin, which was even longer than her height.
“This wolf skin is definitely from a vicious beast.”
Excited, Minuo hugged the wolf skin and rubbed it, then asked, “How did Muliang get all this stuff?”
She unconsciously started guessing, “Could it be that Muliang told the leader about the attack by Blood Beard, and these are rewards from the leader?”
The girl thought this explanation made sense for where the things came from.
After a while, Minuo put the wolf skin down and picked up the swords and knives.
“These swords can only be used by the hunting team.”
Minuo became more certain that her guess was correct.
Crunch, crunch~~
The familiar scene repeated as the hut door was pushed open again.
The three-colored lizard entered, carrying a cloth bag on its back.
Minuo quickly stepped forward to help take the bag off, watching the lizard leave again.
Curious, she opened the bag. “What’s inside this time?”
“Eh, eh, eh???” Minuo stood frozen in shock.
The whole bag was filled with jerky.
The girl suddenly realized her guess might have been wrong. Could a single piece of news really cause the leader to be so generous?
“Muliang didn’t go steal from the leader’s place, did he?”
Minuo glanced at the jerky in the bag, then looked at the five rolls of cloth, the bundle of swords, and the wolf skin.
The stingy leader, how could he have rewarded all of this?
“Muliang must have stolen it.”
Minuo quickly tied up the bag and shoved it under the bed to hide it, in case someone came to search later.
“As long as we can make it through tonight, we can leave before dawn tomorrow.”
“Muliang, really, even if we’re leaving, why take so much stuff?”
“Maybe… we should move everything to the back of Little Xuanwu tonight?”
“Yeah, that’s a good plan. We’ll talk to Muliang when he comes back.”
Minuo hid everything, pacing around the hut, thinking of more ways to conceal things.
Return them?
No, that’s impossible.
Muliang had stolen these things with his own abilities, and Minuo never once considered returning them.
