Chapter 30 – I Can Contribute, Right?
“In the next round of the catastrophic event, the entire world will be utterly destroyed,” Ling Tian said slowly. “At that time, countless variables will emerge.”
“Houses will shatter, buildings will collapse, and powerful monsters will emerge from the depths of the earth,” he continued. “Do you think the place where you’re stocking your supplies will be safe?”
During an apocalypse, there’s generally no permanently secure place, only temporary sanctuaries. So, don’t delude yourself into thinking that you can find a place to stash supplies or hide. The monstrous creatures that appear will be capable of anything, breaking through anything, even the most fortified defenses. Can you guarantee that your stocked supplies won’t attract a monster that destroys your shelter, leaving you with nothing? In a post-apocalyptic world, food, weapons, water sources—everything—will be about finding or even seizing them right then and there,” Ling Tian continued.
Hearing this, Lin Yaoyao understood. Stockpiling supplies wouldn’t help because you couldn’t guarantee the safety of your resources or that others wouldn’t try to take them.
“So, at that time … it’s when true survival skills will be tested,” Lin Yaoyao muttered. When everything becomes false, survival skills will be the only truth.
Looking at Ling Tian, she didn’t think she had strong survival abilities. She couldn’t face monsters or zombies. The survival during an apocalypse isn’t the same as surviving in the wild. With her current survival skills, living through an apocalypse would be incredibly difficult.
The only way to survive might be … to rely on someone like Ling Tian, who is inscrutable.
“So … if I’m not the person you’re looking for, during the apocalypse, you won’t care whether I live or die, right?” Lin Yaoyao asked, inviting some bitterness.
She had the answer to this question, but she still wanted to ask.
“If you aren’t the one I’m looking for, do you think I should carry a useless burden?” Ling Tian retorted.
“I … I can contribute!” Lin Yaoyao furrowed her brows, looking like someone caught in a true apocalypse.
She wasn’t completely useless, was she? At the very least, doing laundry, cooking, keeping the house warm … couldn’t that be considered a kind of contribution? Could she not bring some joy or assistance in that bleak and ruined world of the apocalypse? Just a bit, perhaps?
“In an age where monsters roam, with only the skills you possess now, you would be worthless,” Ling Tian stated bluntly.
Lin Yaoyao immediately fell silent. This was indeed a harsh but irrefutable truth.
“So … you better hope you awaken something different when the time comes,” Ling Tian continued.
Lin Yaoyao didn’t say anything, but she was already thinking that it would be best if she could awaken some special abilities—like breathing fire, generating electricity, or extraordinary abilities.
“By the way, you mentioned before that Puppeteers can reproduce!” Lin Yaoyao looked at the Puppeteer cores on the table and curiously asked, “If Puppeteers and humans have children, will they be human or Puppeteer?”
This is cross-species reproduction, so what kind of creatures would they be?
“Half-Puppeteer, half-human,” Ling Tian replied. “If the first-born is human, the second will be a Puppeteer.”
Therefore, the number of Puppeteers and humans has historically been almost balanced, around one-to-one ratio. But … during the next round of the catastrophic factor, it will be different. This event will reduce the number of humans by half once again.
Lin Yaoyao nodded, feeling scared at the thought.
Hence, her boyfriend must be human—clearly, she didn’t want to give birth to Puppeteers!
As she pondered this, she glanced at Ling Tian. The possibility of him being a Puppeteer should be very low, so she probably wouldn’t give birth to a Puppeteer with him …
But she quickly shook her head. What was she thinking? He might as well abandon her without hesitation when the time comes. Did she still want to have children with him?
Ding-dong!
At that moment, the doorbell rang.
“Who is it?” Curiously closing the box, Lin Yaoyao got up to open the door.
As she did, two women came into view.
One was a young girl, appearing to be eighteen or nineteen, with fair and flawless skin, delicate features, and a vibrant youthfulness. She wore a summery outfit, a short skirt revealing slender legs, radiating a lively aura.
The other woman, around Lin Yaoyao’s age, wore a hoodie and had her hands in her pockets. She had a cap on, covering the upper part of her stern and fair face.
“Ling Tian, I finally found you here!” Without waiting for Lin Yaoyao to ask who they were, the charming and adorable young girl walked in, while the cold and aloof woman stood at the door, leaning against the frame, arms crossed. She looked like a bodyguard!
