Chapter 13: My Parents Asked Me to be a Lapdog?
After returning home from the hotel, Jiang Zhou kicked up his legs and flopped straight onto the couch.
Flipping houses wasn’t physically exhausting, but it definitely wore out the brain.
To get Walmart to agree to his asking price, he’d spent the past few days racking his brain for strategies.
Now that his startup Shangjing had doubled, he could finally relax a bit.
A million yuan wasn’t a small sum. The rest of the summer break could be spent in comfort.
He reached for the remote and randomly changed the TV channel, not because he wanted to watch anything in particular, but just to fill the silence in the living room.
It was way too quiet. He had no idea where his mom and dad had gone off to.
Just then, the master bedroom door creaked open.
Jiang Hongshan and Yuan Youqin tiptoed out, then pounced on him.
“You little brat, is it this hard to catch a glimpse of you these days?!”
Jiang Zhou jumped. “What the— What are you guys doing?”
“What are we doing? That’s our question. You’ve been out every day this summer. What exactly have you been up to?”
Jiang Zhou coughed. “Just hanging out with classmates and stuff.”
“Really?”
“What else could I possibly be doing?”
Yuan Youqin narrowed her eyes. “You’re not in a relationship, are you?”
Jiang Zhou immediately sat up straight. “Nope. Women would only slow down my path to making money!”
“Making money? What money?”
“I plan to start my own business in college. I’m currently looking for a good project.”
The couple exchanged glances. “Are we poor or something? Why do you need to make money?”
Jiang Zhou waved them off. “Your money’s for enjoying life. I’m going to be the family’s pillar from now on.”
“Yeah right. What are you gonna sell, shoe insoles or socks?”
“Why does everyone underestimate me like this?”
Jiang Hongshan coughed. “We can talk about starting a business later. Let’s talk about your college plans first. Have you picked your major?”
Jiang Zhou nodded. “Yeah, I’ve chosen the finance department at Shangjing University.”
“That’s a huge decision. Why didn’t you talk to us first?”
“I asked before, and you guys said it was up to me.”
Jiang Hongshan gave him a side-eye. “Well, things are different now. We’d like to feel involved too.”
Jiang Zhou raised an eyebrow. “You guys usually don’t meddle in my choices. What’s going on today?”
“Because we want to be responsible parents.”
“To tell you the truth…” Yuan Youqin cleared her throat. “It’s actually your Uncle Chu’s idea.”
Jiang Zhou blinked. “What’s my college choice got to do with Officer Chu?”
“Isn’t it obvious? It’s about that Chu Yuwei girl. She’s a girl, after all.”
“So?”
“Your Uncle Chu’s worried about her being alone away from home. He wanted us to find out what school you were applying to.”
Jiang Zhou sat up immediately. “He wants me to look after her? Is he crazy?”
“Your dad and Uncle Chu are old comrades. If you two attend the same school, we’d feel more at ease.”
“And what about Chu Yuwei. Does she know about this?”
Yuan Youqin shook her head. “This was your Uncle Chu’s idea. She doesn’t know yet.”
Jiang Zhou let out a sigh of relief. “Then I refuse.”
“Why?”
“She’s ridiculously arrogant and acts like a princess. I can’t deal with that.”
“Aren’t most girls like that?”
“Well, I’m trying to start a business. I don’t have time for that.”
The couple exchanged another look, this time with a hint of concern.
Chu Yuwei was undeniably pretty. Word had it that she had a line of admirers at school.
But their son always acted like he was completely uninterested.
Could it be?
Did their son actually have a problem?
Was he not into girls?
Their expressions became… complicated.
Their eyes were a mix of worry and pity.
Jiang Zhou’s face darkened. “Can you guys stop with those looks?”
Yuan Youqin hesitated. “Son… you don’t dislike girls, do you?”
“What are you two imagining?!”
“But Yuwei’s so pretty. Why are you always complaining about her?”
Jiang Zhou sighed. “Fine, I’ll be honest. There’s a girl waiting for me at Shangjing University.”
Jiang Hongshan frowned. “Bullshit. You’ve never even been there.”
“I’m telling the truth. Believe it or not.”
Yuan Youqin softened her tone. “We’re not asking you to date Yuwei. And she might not even want to date you. We just want you to keep an eye on her.”
“You’re forcing me to be a simp!”
“Simp? What’s that?”
Jiang Zhou blinked. Oh right, the word didn’t exist yet in this timeline.
“Anyway, forget it. I’m not interested in that underfed princess.” He got up from the couch and walked off to his room.
He was reborn for greatness! Destined to rise to the top and command attention.
Be a simp for the campus beauty?
What a joke!
At that moment…
The couple exchanged looks again, their expressions troubled.
“What do we do now?”
Jiang Hongshan sighed. “If he’s not willing, then let Yuwei apply to the same university instead.”
Yuan Youqin thought about it. “Yeah, that works. Their grades are similar anyway.”
“Alright, I’ll call Old Chu.”

Meanwhile, in Jiang Zhou’s bedroom…
He lit a cigarette in secret and leaned against the headboard.
Girls like Chu Yuwei were indeed popular.
She could be sweet or sassy, innocent or seductive.
She’d act all obedient in front of parents too.
And she came from a decent family. Her dad was a police chief.
What parent wouldn’t want a daughter-in-law like her?
But Jiang Zhou knew.
At Shangjing University, he’d meet another girl.
One who matched Chu Yuwei in looks and personality.
And in his previous life, he and that girl had shared more than a decade of deep love.
If not for an accident, they would’ve grown old together.
With someone like that waiting for him, why would he lower himself to be someone’s simp?
In fact…
Even if Chu Yuwei came crawling to him, he might still say no.
That campus beauty was as spoiled as they came.
If they got together, she’d definitely never let him flirt around.
But what about the girl from his past life, the one who stayed by his side for years?
So, it was either he cut ties with Chu Yuwei completely or Chu Yuwei would have to play second fiddle.
Though realistically speaking, it was all just wishful thinking.
There was no way someone like Chu Yuwei would ever chase after him.
She’d clearly said she wasn’t dating anyone in college.
She probably didn’t like him at all.
This whole matchmaking scheme was just his parents and Officer Chu playing matchmaker.
“Overthinking ages people.
“My goal right now is to become a business mogul.
“Yep. Time to sleep.”

NGL, I’ve seen so many variations of this novel with the exact same starting premise, and at this point I kinda wanna see the girl actually end up with the MC, even if it’s only as a side chick. The relationship dynamics get more interesting this way.
