Chapter 36: Social Practice
Chu Yuwei?
Jiang Zhou paused for a moment.
With so many roads in University Town, and so many alleys in the food street… and he just happened to run into her while out for a business talk?
Seems like calling her his “little tail” wasn’t wrong at all.
Did she secretly tie a string to my, uh… waistband or something?
Just as he was lost in thought, the boy walking next to Chu Yuwei suddenly spoke up.
His voice was loud enough to be heard across half the street.
“This time’s social practice task, everyone knows what it is, right?
“We’re going to get these vendors to sign this Food Safety and Health Agreement!
“We want them to promise not to reuse oil, not to use expired ingredients, and so on.
“This is to cultivate your sense of social responsibility. Got it, everyone?”
The speaker looked like a student council leader.
His skin was dark and rough, his belly round, and he had slicked-back hair that glistened with hair gel, making him look years older.
The students following him nodded in unison. “We understand, Senior Qian!”
Senior Qian crossed his arms behind his back and looked quite pleased.
“But there’s something I have to remind you all of.
“Most of the vendors here have little formal education and very low standards!
“You’ll likely be refused or even driven away.
“This happens often. Very commonly, in fact.
“In those situations, you need to humble yourselves. Even if you have to beg, get them to sign!”
The group suddenly hesitated.
Why is off-campus practice this difficult?
We have to beg?
We are still students, and it’s embarrassing to do that sort of thing in public.
“Senior, what do you mean by begging exactly?”
“I have a lot of experience in this. Just watch me later, I’ll teach you.”
Senior Qian gave a sly smile and stole a glance at Chu Yuwei.
He had specifically requested to lead this social practice team for the sake of this goddess-like junior.
Soon, he’d show off his charisma and win over these merchants like a true mature man.
“Yuwei, you don’t have any experience with this, do you?”
Chu Yuwei looked a little worried. “No, I haven’t done anything like this before… What if they won’t sign?”
Senior Qian quickly comforted her. “It’s okay. It’s normal for girls to feel shy. I’ll help you with the negotiations.”
“But senior, I want to try it myself first.”
“Sure, I’ll step in if you run into trouble.”
Chu Yuwei nodded. “Okay, thank you, senior.”
“No need to thank me. Heroes love to save beauties, haha.”
“…Senior, do you think you’re funny?”
“You can understand my humor? You really get me!”
At this point, the girls in the group exchanged glances.
What does he mean by “girls are shy”? Is only this Chu girl considered a girl?
Senior Qian is clearly playing favorites.
Totally crushing on her.
Just then, Chu Yuwei’s eyes lit up.
She spotted Jiang Zhou standing up ahead, looking her way.
Her face lit up with surprise and joy as she ran toward him.
“Jiang Zhou! What are you doing here?”
“Business meeting. You?”
Chu Yuwei held up the agreement. “I’m here for social practice! Cool, right?”
Jiang Zhou took it and glanced over. “No reusing oil, no disposable containers. Damn, you guys are here to wreck businesses.”
“Is it that bad?”
“Not terrible, but no business here is going to agree.”
Chu Yuwei immediately pouted playfully. “But this is my first time doing social practice. Can’t you help me out?”
Jiang Zhou looked at her face. “You think I’m so good-looking that everyone will just do me a favor?”
“Yeah! Even the manager at Walmart gave you face!”
“But do you even know how much it costs not to reuse oil?”
“How much?”
“About ten times more. Which means, they’d rather shut down than sign.”
Chu Yuwei’s eyes widened. “It’s that hard?”
“You guys are here doing this for fun, but these folks are out here trying to feed their families.”
While the two were talking, Senior Qian suddenly walked over.
He glanced at Jiang Zhou with clear displeasure.
Where the hell did this guy come from, getting all close with the junior he liked?
“Yuwei, who’s this?”
“He’s my high… high school classmate. He goes to school across from here.”
Senior Qian nodded, but his tone was cold. “You said just now that no one will sign? Isn’t that a bit presumptuous?”
Jiang Zhou gave him a look. “It’s just common sense. Otherwise, no one would run restaurants.”
“Alright. Since you’re also a student, I’ll teach you how to negotiate!”
With that, Senior Qian strutted into the nearest shop.
By sheer bad luck, it happened to be… a fried chicken shop.
Among all the eateries on this street, it was by far the heaviest user of oil.
The shop owner wasn’t highly educated either.
His name was Da Qiang.
He had three kids, a sick wife, and the entire household depended on that fried chicken shop for survival.
So the moment he saw the agreement, his face changed.
“Get lost. You want me to change oil for every single chicken cutlet? Kid, go home and drink your mama’s milk!”
Senior Qian forced a smile. “Sir, reusing oil causes cancer. It violates food safety laws.”
Da Qiang glared at him. “Then let the inspectors deal with me. Why do you students care?”
“But if your store gets shut down, the loss will be bigger!”
“Are you leaving or not? If not, I’ll deep fry you!”
Senior Qian stood there awkwardly.
Why the hell did I pick a fried chicken joint?
I’d never run into such a fierce rejection before.
Maybe I should just try a different place?
At that moment, Jiang Zhou chimed in. “Told you it wouldn’t work. You didn’t believe me.”
Chu Yuwei nodded. “Looks like it really is hard. Senior, maybe you should go.”
Hearing that, Senior Qian froze mid-step.
He couldn’t back down now. Not after that.
He had to prove himself in front of Chu Yuwei.
Show her that he could do what others couldn’t.
“Boss, we’re students, just here to earn credits. Can you help us out and sign?”
Da Qiang turned around and thought for a moment. “Give me 20,000 yuan, and I’ll sign right now.”
Senior Qian was stunned. “Why would I pay you? It’s a policy you’re supposed to follow!”
“No money? Then stop talking nonsense. Go home and get your mom to sign it!”
