Chapter 8: Yes, the School Goddess is Really in My House
The sun was setting, and the sky gradually darkened.
Jiang Zhou had spent the entire day wandering around but still hadn’t found any suitable project. After all, making money wasn’t something that could be done overnight. Doubling his assets wasn’t going to be that easy.
Plus, it was almost dinnertime, and he hadn’t eaten much today.
So Jiang Zhou wrapped up his day, hopped on his bike, and rode back to Shengze Jiayuan.
But as soon as he entered the living room, he froze.
Because inside weren’t just his parents, there was also a middle-aged man in a police uniform, chatting happily with them.
Sitting next to the officer was a girl with long hair draped over her shoulders. Her facial features were delicate, and her side profile was gentle and refined.
Just sitting there quietly, she looked like a painting.
“Officer Chu? And… Chu Yuwei?” Jiang Zhou felt like he had time-traveled again.
What is going on?
He wouldn’t be surprised by most guests showing up in his home, but Chu Yuwei?
Hearing his voice, all four people in the living room stood up.
His father, Jiang Hongshan, looked over. “You finally show up. On break and still out all day. What’re you so busy with?”
Jiang Zhou took off his jacket. “Just wandering around. Why didn’t you tell me we had guests?”
“You’ve got some nerve asking! Catching a murderer is a big deal. Why didn’t you tell us?”
“That happened days ago already.” His mom, Yuan Youqin, gave him a glare. “If Officer Chu hadn’t come to deliver a letter of commendation, we’d still be in the dark.”
Jiang Zhou walked over to the sofa and glanced at Chu Yuwei.
At that moment, she kept her head down, as if she didn’t know him.
Girls were always like this. They were well-behaved around elders.
But if the letter of commendation was the reason, Chu Xiong could’ve come by himself.
Chu Yuwei never liked joining in on things, so why was she here?
Yuan Youqin shot her son another look. “What’re you standing there for? Say hello!”
Jiang Zhou quickly spoke up, “Hello, Uncle Chu.”
Officer Chu Xiong smiled and nodded. “Hello, Jiang Zhou.”
“I already said, I was just doing what I should. No need for praise.”
Chu Xiong waved it off. “I didn’t come just to praise you. I mainly came to visit an old friend.”
Jiang Zhou was puzzled. “Old friend?”
“You didn’t know?” Chu Xiong chuckled.
“Know what?”
His father cleared his throat. “Chu Xiong and I were comrades back in the army. We even bunked together.”
Chu Xiong nodded. “If it weren’t for Jiang Zhou, I wouldn’t have known you lived so close.”
Jiang Zhou couldn’t help laughing. “If you couldn’t find each other in the same city, maybe you two weren’t that close.”
“You brat! We just lost touch, that’s all!”
As they talked, Yuan Youqin looked over at Chu Yuwei.
She thought the girl looked very pretty — elegant and quiet.
Why wasn’t her son taking the initiative to talk to her?
After thinking for a moment, she said, “Yuwei, I heard you and Jiang Zhou are classmates?”
Chu Yuwei nodded politely. “Yes, Auntie, we were in the same class all three years of high school.”
“You’re such a pretty girl. Officer Chu is very lucky.”
“I’m not that pretty…” Chu Yuwei seemed a bit shy, sneaking a glance at Jiang Zhou.
But he wasn’t even paying attention to her. He was glued to his phone, completely absorbed.
Chu Yuwei, now irritated, asked, “What are you looking at? Not even saying a word to me?”
Jiang Zhou didn’t look up. “Reading. Kids should be quiet when adults are talking.”
“Oh.” Chu Yuwei huffed in frustration and peeked at his screen.
He was reading a business management book titled Effective and Outstanding Management.
After all, he was planning to start his own business right after starting university.
So he wanted to make good use of the summer to study management strategies.
“You’re reading that?”
“Just something I’m interested in.”
Hearing that, Chu Yuwei gave him a sidelong glance.
She could tell that Jiang Zhou really had changed.
He wasn’t the immature boy he used to be.
He didn’t seek attention anymore, seemed uninterested in everything, and spoke to adults with just the right balance of respect and confidence.
Now he was even reading business books.
Chu Yuwei suddenly felt like Jiang Zhou seemed to have lived ten more years than her.
But what she didn’t know was… that feeling was absolutely real.
Ding ding ding!
At that moment, Jiang Zhou’s phone buzzed.
Someone had tagged him in the class QQ group.
Zheng Yu: “Jiang Zhou, are you really not going on the graduation trip?”
Jiang Zhou: “Not interested.”
Then his buddy Guo Wei chimed in.
Guo Wei: “Bro, the school beauty is going! And she’s bringing a swimsuit!”
Zheng Yu: “Guo Wei, can you be serious for once?”
Jiang Zhou: “Even if she was naked, I wouldn’t care.”
Zheng Yu: “Why?”
Jiang Zhou glanced at Chu Yuwei’s… less-than-impressive chest.
Sigh!
Kids these days really were malnourished.
Once he made money, he swore to improve the nation’s nutrition.
So every girl could grow into the beauty they deserved to be.
Chu Yuwei blinked, confused. “What are you looking at?”
“Nothing. Guo Wei said you were wearing a swimsuit, and I said people would probably look forward to that.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Probably everyone but me.”
Chu Yuwei was quiet for a moment. Then said, “Actually, I don’t really want to go anymore. Graduation trips are kind of childish.”
As soon as he heard that, Jiang Zhou opened his phone and typed.
Jiang Zhou: “The school beauty said she’s not going anymore.”
Zheng Yu: “Nonsense. She told me herself she’s going for sure.”
Jiang Zhou: “I just asked her. She said she’s not going.”
Guo Wei: “You private messaged her again?”
Jiang Zhou: “She’s sitting right next to me. Annoying as hell.”
The chat group went silent for three seconds.
Then it exploded with laughing emojis.
“Jiang Zhou, are you daydreaming again at home?”
“So tragic. After being rejected, now he lives in fantasy.”
“Why don’t you just say the school beauty’s in your bed too?”
Zheng Yu: “I invited Yuwei over to my place many times and she always refused. But you?”
Jiang Zhou: “Only an idiot would invite her. She came on her own.”
