Chapter 14: I won’t eat this shit anymore.
Director Chen from the Medical Department expressed his admiration, highlighting the significance of preserving the surgery footage for educational purposes. He considered such videos to be invaluable assets to the hospital. However, their enthusiasm was abruptly disrupted when the live broadcast’s endoscope camera began to shake, becoming contaminated and producing a blurry image.
Doctor Zhang Fan and Director Chen were momentarily at a loss for words, discouraged by the situation. Urgently, they demanded the camera lens be promptly cleaned. Fortunately, after the lens was cleared, the surgical process resumed in its visually pleasing clarity. However, the camera shook again five seconds later, and the lens became contaminated.
Doctor Zhang Fan, growing increasingly irritable, voiced his frustration at the assistant responsible for holding the scope, deeming their performance subpar. Director Chen shared the sentiment, lamenting how the assistant’s incompetence had marred what could have been a perfect surgical video.
Inside the operating room, Surgeon Lin Feng patiently guided the “incompetent assistant,” Dr. Song Ziming, providing instructions on anticipating and mitigating contamination by retracting and returning the scope to the docking position when the procedure commenced and contaminants were likely to be released.
In addition, Surgeon Lin Feng advised the “underachiever” Dr. Song Ziming on various matters. He pointed out that Song Ziming’s arm was getting tired. He advised leveraging the anesthesia stand for support, thereby reducing the strain caused by the extended suspension of his upper arm.
Furthermore, Lin Feng cautioned Song Ziming against consuming alcohol the day before surgery, despite his inclination for moderate drinking. Finally, Lin Feng stressed the importance of maintaining a steady visual plane during the procedure, emphasizing that the scope should never be tilted, regardless of the circumstances.
Dr. Song Ziming nodded incessantly, resembling a chicken pecking at grains, acknowledging and internalizing the instructions given to him.
“Mm, mm, mm. Okay, okay.”
“Wow, Dr. Lin is so amazing!”
“Sniff, sniff, sniff! I’ve learned a lot!”
“I finally grasp it now!” Exclaimed Song Ziming, overwhelmed with gratitude towards Dr. Lin for imparting such valuable knowledge. Tears of excitement rose in his eyes, marking a significant turning point in his learning journey. However, his emotional moment was postponed by a voice beside him—the Director of the Medical Department. The director bluntly told Song Ziming to step aside, criticizing his inadequate performance as the scope holder.
This unexpected remark fueled Song Ziming’s irritation. Defiantly, he retorted, “I am learning, and my progress has been exceptional. How dare anyone ask me to leave? Who dares to take my place?”
With a mix of anger and curiosity, Song Ziming turned his head to identify the person responsibly, only to find Director Chen from the Medical Department—the boss himself.
Knowing the repercussions of challenging the director, Song Ziming reluctantly relinquished his position as the scope holder, his face streaked with tear stains as he cast a reluctant glance at the director.
Meanwhile, Dr. Zhang Fan, already attired for surgery, swiftly took over the lens, demonstrating adept control and providing Lin Feng with a clear view. Lin Feng found the procedure significantly easier to manage with a new assistant and an improved lens. He swiftly realized the remarkable capabilities of this assistant, who anticipated his every move and promptly provided the precise surgical view he required. The surgery proceeded remarkably comfortably, far superior to when Song Ziming was the assistant holding the scope.
Lin Feng was amazed by the doctor’s expertise beside him, whose skills surpassed his expectations. Without dwelling on it, Lin Feng continued the dissection and separation process. Time flew by as minutes ticked away—5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes. With Dr. Zhang Fan, an expert from the provincial capital hospital, as his assistant, Lin Feng’s speed increased exponentially.
Meanwhile, Song Ziming found himself speechless, feeling that he was only dragging down Dr. Lin and realizing his inadequacy. The surgery was completed 40 minutes later as Lin Feng used a suction device to remove residual fluid. Director Chen and Dr. Zhang Fan exchanged a shocked glance, unable to believe the speed at which the high-difficulty SAP surgery had been accomplished. The achievement left Director Chen ecstatic, envisioning the video becoming a classic surgical case for the hospital’s learning purposes.
Lin Feng removed his surgical gown, prompting Dr. Zhang Fan’s astonishment at his youthfulness. Curiosity getting the better of him, Dr. Zhang Fan approached Lin Feng and introduced himself as a Provincial Duck University Hospital doctor. They shook hands, and Dr. Zhang Fan admitted to holding the scope during the surgery. Lin Feng praised him for his impressive performance.
Dr. Zhang Fan felt awkward being praised by an intern despite his professor-level status. Intrigued, he inquired about Lin Feng’s source of surgical knowledge, to which Lin Feng mentioned books, videos, and medical journals. Dr. Zhang Fan couldn’t help but question the truth, contemplating his bet about eating necrotic tissue from pancreatitis if the intern was amazing.
Cai Song and his sister anxiously awaited the outcome outside the operating room. When Lin Feng and the team emerged, Cai Song eagerly approached Dr. Zhang Fan, seeking an update on his mother’s surgery. Dr. Zhang Fan attributed the success to Dr. Lin’s exceptional surgical skills, surpassing his own. Cai Song shows his gratitude to Dr. Lin, impressed by his abilities.
During the interaction, Dr. Zhang Fan discreetly handed Lin Feng his business card, suggesting they have dinner together and revealing his enthusiasm for recruiting Lin Feng to the Duck Hospital. Director Chen instantly grew suspicious and protective, viewing Zhang Fan’s actions as an attempt to undermine him.
