- Chapter 7 - Hunting The Archfiend, I got a potion!
Lynn prodded the shoulder of the half-wolf warrior next to him to attract its attention.
”Follow me,” he said.
”Always, master.”
Lynn was wary of his surroundings, since the treasure was high grade. Most likely, there was a horrible Archfiend class monster nearby. Fully alert, Lynn moved closer to the mushrooms. Suddenly, Lynn heard a hissing sound. Looking around, Lynn saw that there were potion mushrooms growing on a huge tree. Yet, the tree had a strange pattern on it.
Lynn did not care about the pattern until he heard the threat, and upon closer examination he discovered that there was a python that was at least thirty meters1 long trapped in a tree! An Archfiend! Without Lynn’s order, the wolf warrior rushed straight ahead. The giant python was not willing to show any weakness, and pounced on the wolf with full force.
”Half-wolf warriors, come over here and help!” Lynn calmly ordered.
The two other warriors ran straight over. With a three versus one battle, the tides turned more to Lynn’s favor. However, the enemy was still too powerful even with the three werewolves as its opponents. Lynn watched their fight and gritted his teeth. Then, he quietly touched a mushroom. Instantly, it broke. A sense of dread overcame him.. Lynn bent over and tried to remain as motionless as possible. His eyes darted back and forth, not daring to look at the dead potion mushroom.
One meter. Ten meters. Lynn slowly crawled forward unfazed by the monster that was fighting his wolves. Fifty meters. A hundred meters. Lynn could now view the red mushrooms clearly enough to see the special patterns and the magic that radiated out of it. It grew high above the trunk of the tree, about ten meters away. Lynn was not wearing heavy armor, but with determination he grabbed the base of the trunk and started to climb up. Finally! The four potion mushrooms were taken by Lynn and brought down the tree. Lynn was excited. However, at this point he heard the voice of his half-wolf warriors.
”Master! Watch out!”
Lynn looked back and bursted into a cold sweat. The python found something amiss, and started to chase Lynn from behind. Moreover, it was not that far behind! Lynn crawled back up the tree and climbed onto a branch. The monster was faster than Lynn thought. It looked at Lynn escaping and opened its mouth to spit out a burst of fire. Lynn knew he would die if the fire reached him, so he tightly clutched the mushrooms and leapt away from the fire while shouting at his companion army.
”Catch me!”
The warriors ran hard as they had an instinctual understanding of Lynn’s actions. Lynn leaped more than twenty meters straight down, about seven or eight floors high. With Lynn’s current strength, a direct fall would certainly lead to death. Buno’s face was a pale shade of white at the scene unfolding before his eyes.
The python sensed Lynn’s intentions, and counter-attacked. It opened its massive mouth and bit at him. It would rather use the magic mushrooms directly instead of letting Lynn have them. Two half warriors attacked the giant snake, and Lynn safely fell onto the chest of the third warrior. Both of them fell to the ground from the amount of inertia Lynn carried. A loud noise resounded in the surrounding area.
The half warrior’s strength was amazing, as Lynn landed without a single injury. The monster’s giant eyes watched as Lynn took away the magical drug and went crazy. It no longer cared about the two warriors attacking it and desperately chased after Lynn. Lynn had already calmed down by this point, and stood in place while holding the mushrooms.
When the python was about to bite Lynn, its tail was caught by a half-wolf warrior and was dragged away. The half warriors were not for nothing. Protecting their master was their instinct. The python was besieged by the three werewolves, and it spat out a mouthful of fire as it grew weaker. Since it was obsessed with Lynn, it had allowed the wolves to beat it for half a day. By now it had reached its limits. As a final blow, a wolf broke its upper jaw to kill the monster. Lynn sensed that a lot of people were fast approaching his location so he quickly ordered his entourage as they approached.
”Now, take the wheat seeds and collect the serpent’s body! Hurry up!”
Once everything was in hand, a line of people quickly retreated into the distance. Not all of the wheat had been collected, but Lynn calmly assessed the situation. What they had collected would be enough. With only fifteen acres of land, there would be an excess of seeds if everything was collected.
By the time that the new fields were made, it was estimated that the matured wheat would provide all of the seeds needed. It was important to give up extra supplies in order to avoid casualties. Lynn’s decision was very wise, since as soon as they left a large number of monsters rushed over to the battle site. Even from a thousand meters, they could feel the magic emanations. Obviously, there were demons in the mix.
”Fortunately, your order was given in time,” Buno said happily. “Otherwise, we may have suffered a fate worse than death, Lord Lynn.” Lynn looked grim at the response.
”Do not be thankful. Be vigilant. It is not safe until we get to the village.”
”Yes!” everyone replied.
Along the way, the party ran into beasts that were attracted by the bloody corpse of the python, but they were quickly handled. The strongest beasts would be fed to the Half Wolf Corps. By the evening, Lynn and his party finally arrived at the village. Lucy had been waiting at the gate for a long time, and after seeing Lynn she ran to him and held his arm. She looked distressed at the burn marks and scratches on Lynn’s body that he had received from the snake and tree branches. She looked at Lynn and her eyes suddenly became red as she was about to cry.
”I was afraid you died…” she aggrieved. Lynn stroked her hair in response.
”Do not cry. Look at what I brought back!”
The half-wolf warriors dragged the python’s body through the gate. The villagers cried out in shock, while Lucy covered her mouth in surprise. The body of an Archfiend! Lynn actually managed to hunt a monster! Sixteen year olds that could lead a hunt for Archfiend monsters, even for the most belligerent northern nobles, were very rare. Lucy looked at Lynn with twinkling eyes.
”No, look at this,” Lynn smiled and said.
Lynn took out the magic mushroom from his arms and presented them.
”Magic potions! Oh my God! You got magic potions! And they are complete! Can it be planted?!” she exclaimed.
Lynn turned the mushroom over and explained his findings.
”The spores are still there, but while it is going to be difficult to reproduce, we can try to breed it.”
Lucy was a little lost in shock. How many nobles desperately accumulated wealth, but were unable to buy the seeds for magic potions?! Lynn not only had fire magic potions, but he could also reproduce them!
