Chapter 17: The System Knows Me Well—Another Character Unlocked!
The air was thick with the stench of blood, and the ground was soaked in crimson, yet Yang Yi’s battle intent only grew fiercer. His hands tightened around the war halberd, his swings becoming more ruthless, more precise, as he continued to carve a path through the desperate survivors. His Supreme Tyrant Bone hummed in excitement, resonating with the violence around him. There was a twisted joy in the carnage. Perhaps it was his nature, or perhaps it was the influence of the battlefield, but in this moment, he felt truly alive.
……………………………………………………………………………
“Kill him!”
“If we must die, we’ll take this monster with us!”
The cries of the desperate survivors echoed through the stone corridors.
These were people who had already lost hope, who knew they wouldn’t escape this tomb alive, and yet, faced with a man mowing them down like wheat, their survival instincts screamed at them to resist.
Even those without weapons lunged forward, their eyes burning with hatred and madness. They clawed, bit, and swung their fists, trying to overwhelm him with sheer numbers. But before they could even get close, the halberd carved through them. Blood splattered in arcs, bodies collapsed before they could even scream, and limbs were sent flying through the air.
This was not a battle—it was a one-sided slaughter.
……………………………………………………………………………
Perhaps it was rage. Perhaps it was fear. Or perhaps it was just the final burst of defiance from those who had nothing left to lose. Regardless, more and more people rushed at him, their movements wild, their faces contorted in unrecognizable expressions of desperation. Yang Yi’s gaze remained cold.
“How foolish.”
A moment ago, these same people had been killing each other just to survive a little longer. Now, simply because he had entered their space with a weapon, they banded together in one last, hopeless charge.
It didn’t matter. They were all going to die.
With one great swing, the halberd cut through the air, and flesh split like paper.
“Pfft—”
Another group of bodies fell, their blood pooling at his feet. From a distance, Meng Jiangnv watched silently, her expression unreadable. Though she was concerned for him, she did not interfere. She understood that this was not her battle. She simply stood back and observed the chaos, her eyes lingering on his broad back as he carved through the last remnants of resistance.
……………………………………………………………………………
Soon, only three people remained. Their faces were pale, their bodies trembling. Unlike the others, they did not attempt to run. They had given up. Their fates were sealed, and they knew it. One of them, an older man with tired eyes, exhaled slowly and spoke, his voice hoarse.
“Why?”
His question hung in the air, not carrying anger, just a hollow emptiness.
Yang Yi met his gaze without hesitation.
“Two reasons,” he said.
“One—to give you all a proper death.”
“And two—because I want to live.”
The old man chuckled bitterly. “You said… you wouldn’t eat us,” he muttered. Yang Yi nodded. “I won’t.” “I’ll bury you all properly.” His words were honest, unwavering.
The old man suddenly laughed, his voice full of madness.
“Then you’re as doomed as we are!”
“You think you can bury us in this tomb?” he spat. “This entire underground palace is built with reinforced stone, you fool! You’ll never dig your way out!”
“And even if you could…” A wild grin spread across his face. “You think you’re alone in here? The tomb guardians are still watching.” The laughter echoed through the corridor, a sound that carried both insanity and despair.
Yang Yi remained calm. “That’s not your concern,” he said flatly. Even if the underground palace was impossible to dig through, it didn’t matter. He had enough resources to survive for centuries, and if he couldn’t escape, then he would simply outlive his captors. Besides, he didn’t need to justify himself to the already dead.
Pfft!
With one final thrust of his halberd, the last three survivors fell.
……………………………………………………………………………
Exhaling slowly, he lowered his bloodstained weapon. He did not feel guilt. Only an unfamiliar fatigue. He thought to himself—if he hadn’t awakened the system, he would have been one of them. Just another nameless corpse, lying in the dark, waiting to rot. He had no sympathy for the dead, but he understood the fate he had narrowly avoided.
Then, the system’s notifications flooded his mind.
Ding!
“Congratulations, host…”
Ding!
“Congratulations, host…”
The messages kept coming, listing out rewards. More cultivation time. More lifespan. More supplies. The loot was enormous, but what truly caught his attention was something unexpected.
Ding!
[Congratulations, host! You have successfully looted the adopted daughter of Zhang Laohan. The character has been placed into the system space.].
Yang Yi froze for a moment, he thought, Another person?
His consciousness entered the system space, and sure enough, he saw a new figure. It was a young woman, around eighteen years old, dressed in plain but well-kept clothes. She had a tall, slender figure, her posture elegant yet reserved. Her features were delicate, her beauty easily in the nineties, but there was something natural and unpretentious about her. This was a rare countryside beauty.
Yang Yi murmured to himself.
“Interesting.”
He had looted so many corpses, yet so far, the only people he had obtained were women who were undeniably stunning. There were surely many men who had wives, sisters, and daughters before they died—yet not all of them ended up in the system. Only the ones who were extraordinary in some way.
A realization struck him.
“So… the system understands my preferences?”
“Only the most beautiful and unique women can be looted?”
He chuckled, shaking his head.
“System, you really do understand me, don’t you?”
As his loot pile grew, so did his power. And this was only the beginning.
