Chapter 33. It is a Dead End! I Can Finally Buy a Magic Book!
”I know. They are going to take ten percent, right? Borrow a hundred gold coins, and receive only ninety.” Lynn said. Bunno nodded in response.
”The interest is also high. With an one hundred gold coin withdrawal, the interest will be ten coins for a single month. And the popular way of the Northern Aristocracy is to include the new interest when calculating the next compound.”
This was the kind of high interest debt that was usually made by a pub or a lord. If one borrowed a hundred gold coins for a year, the amount needed to repay would be more than three hundred coins. Very few dared to borrow money as it was difficult to pay off. Nobles often became bankrupt because of the high interest. Additionally, the loans were protected by Imperial Law, which meant that if the money was not returned the borrower would be punished. Lynn was relieved, however.
”The interest is not that much. Take a few guards and quietly sell the magic potions. Then borrow a hundred gold coins. Can you do that?”
Right now, time was very tight. Even if he managed to sell his magic potions within the next five days, he would still need to borrow money. Buno was determined to get the money nevertheless. Lynn nodded and had Buno ride the best horse in the territory with his entourage behind him. Fortunately, the transportation for magic mushrooms was more convenient as they could be easily transported on five horses. The travel speed would be much faster without a cart.
Lynn made ten kilos of wine and sent it to the two Magician’s Association emissaries. The messengers saw the wine and their eyes opened wide. A silver coin was half a month’s worth of bread for an ordinary person. Being able to openly drink wine was mostly impossible for civilians, with most not being able to taste it their entire lives.
Lynn’s generosity shocked the two emissaries. The quality of the wine also shocked them. It was made from the best mountain grapes causing the quality to be much better than the previous red wine. It could even compare to the wine of the upper central region that cost three silver coins.
Lynn also took a taste of the wine and found it exquisite. There was nothing wrong with his current method of winemaking. As long as the raw materials were better, the quality of the wine would rise. After helping the messengers settle in, Lynn went back to the study where Lucy was waiting for him. She welcomed him in.
”Is the business with the gold coins settled?”
”It has been solved,” Lynn said while nodding. “We will borrow a little money, and with the sales for the potions it will be a simple matter to pay them back.”
”It really is possible…” Lucy started out of worry, but Lynn interrupted her.
”Do not mention it anymore. If I decided to sell my carriage, would you agree?”
”Of course not.”
”Then doing the same for your carriage is not the correct option. I care about you just like you care about me, so all we need to do is pay back the money owed together.”
Lucy paused, then gently walked up to Lynn and hugged him. Neither of them spoke as they held each other, but then Lucy blushed.
”You should be a more honest man,” she said.
”I cannot help it,” Lynn said helplessly. Lucy let go of Lynn.
”You meditate, and after a while I will go to bed. I feel sleepy.”
Stating that, she went back to her room and changed her clothes. She lied down on her bed with her heart still beating fast. She was actually expecting Lynn to follow her, but he did not. She could not tell if she was disappointed or relieved as she turned over and slept. Lynn continued to meditate as the power of Starfire Fury was immense. This type of magic usually consumed a lot of mana, so Lynn wanted to expand his mana pool as much as possible.
In a war, a little more mana could allow a magician to kill one more enemy soldier. Lynn lived by these rules everyday, so he spent a lot of time meditating. The two messengers’ admiration also increased, as they originally thought he was a born genius. Yet, now they understood that there was a lot more effort put into his power.
Out of respect, the two men waited with patience without a complaint. However, five days passed and it was time for them to leave. There was no news of Buno as noon came around. The two messengers could not help but find Lynn.
”You see…” they said with embarrassment as they wanted to inform him they were leaving. ”If I do not have the money in the evening, you can leave as soon as possible. It would be too late by then,” Lynn said as he took the initiative.
”Then you…” the messangers said after they looked at each other.
”I do not blame you. I could not gather the money because I was not capable enough. You should go without any burdens.”
The two messengers looked like they wanted to say something, but eventually sighed and said nothing. They were only messengers with low levels in the WIzard’s Association. They could not help Lynn.
The afternoon passed quickly. Lucy went looking for Lynn as she was anxious. She could not even sleep. The two messengers had prepared their horses in advance, and they actually should have departed by now. Yet, Lynn’s character and generosity made them wait. Just when they were about to leave, someone appeared in the distance.
However, when Lynn saw Buno and the others, sadness overcame his face as they had injuries. Was there a fight?! Buno rode up to Lynn as fast as he could and took out a bloodied purse.
”Master Lynn, I succeeded. Six hundred gold coins are inside. Envoys, could you check the contents?”
